One of the basic principles that drives skillveri is that innovation has to be relevant to the user’s needs.

It makes us immensely happy to share our founder’s vision reflected on Prof Rishikesha Krishnan‘s (Professor-Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) personal blog. Read the full post here.

In his blog post, he quotes L Kannan on the challenges of bringing groundbreaking products into the market. And the general mindset in accepting innovative products. skillveri’s efforts in bringing out the simulation based welding training tool Aura, has also been highlighted.

Its good to note that Aura was built ground-up taking various stakeholders perspective. From the education domain, we found the course curriculum has not kept pace with changing market demands. From industry perspective, there is a surge in demand for trained MIG Welders. Aura is designed to teach MIG welding first, and in a very short timeframe. As opposed to conventional training methods which teach the various welding techniques in the order in which they were invented, This makes learning complex,time consuming, and not on par with the needs of industry and students.

The optimum sequence for welding training

If one looks at the sequence in which welding skill is imparted, it is based on the order in which technology has evolved.

This is akin to forcing someone wanting to use computers to learn MS DOS and Windows 3.1 because those technologies came first, much before Windows 7 or 8.

MIG and TIG are the most commonly used types of welding, especially in the automotive industry. The remuneration is also considerably higher than Gas Welding and Arc Welding, and so is the quality expected from the welder.

Since the formal vocational training syllabus enforces this order, someone who needs to know just MIG or TIG is forced to learn Gas and Arc welding.

If one now looks at different types of welding from a purely human skill approach, the following approach is more optimal:

The Modular Employability Skills is a good initiative enabling youth to acquire skills one by one, throwing the doors open to youth who had missed out on more formal training courses like ITIs and Polytechnics. However, for skills relevant to welding (Sl # 98 to 108). though MIG welding alone is available as a course of 90 hours, it requires you to have Stick Welding and Gas Cutting courses, each of 120 hours, as a prerequisite!

It is high time the industry lobbied for changing the sequence of skill training in the manner required by the industry, and not an obsolete one just because “that’s how it was from time immemorial”.

The trap of low fees long duration training

All of the government run vocational skill training programs are highly subsidized and therefore priced very low. Similarly, over a period of time, informal training programs too have followed the same approach – longer duration (6 month), lower fees (10-20k).

Sadly, these courses are so outdated that the students still need further training in house at companies that recruit them. The need of the hour is highly practical oriented (80-90% practical) short duration (2-3 weeks) courses, which prepare them for the needs of the industry.

Now the question comes to what is a fair price for these short duration courses? Because many of the ineffective informal courses too have taken the 6 month approach, many people tend to base their reasoning on a per week cost, and concluding at a totally unreasonable 2-3k for a 2-3 week course. In fact, these ineffective long courses have hidden costs – mainly opportunity costs.

Let’s compare two hypothetical courses- course A is 3 months long, and charges 12,000. Course B is 2 weeks long, and charges 15,000. Which is costlier, assuming both have similar job prospects, of earning 7,500 per month after the course, and are placed immediately after the course?

The real cost of course A is the course fees + 2.5 months of salary as opportunity cost = 12,000 + 18,750 = 30,750/- The real cost of course B is just the course fees at Rs 15,000, as one starts earning much earlier. Thus course B is cheaper by more than 50%, though on the face of it, it looks costlier!

CFO Connect is a thought-leadership magazine for senior professionals, and their August 2013 issue has an article by Sabarinath.C, skillveri’s co-founder and CEO.


The article speaks on Skill Gap from multiple perspectives – that of employees, employers, the problems in financing the training, etc.


Sabari goes on to make some suggestions for addressing skill gap. If these could be implemented, it could make skill training viable and cost-effective for the industries, address their manpower problems and also improve the skill levels of the workers  and help them scale up their career.

skillveri's AURA at INTEC 2013, Coimbatore.

skillveri was happy to participate in INTEC 2013 – The Industrial Trade Fair organised by CODISSIA, the Coimbatore Distric Small Industries Association. It was an event where so many innovations were exhibited, and AURA, our welding simulator was a star attraction.

We had a large number of interested visitors coming in and trying their hand on our welding simulator, and had a lot of positive feedback about our tool.

We thank Hitech India Equipments Pvt Ltd for allowing us to share their stall at C-125. We are glad that our product contributed significantly to the stall being one of the highest visited stalls in INTEC 2013.

skillveri CEO's visit to Bannari Amman Institute of Technology

skillveri’s CEO Sabarinath.C Nair had the opportunity to be at the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam.

Sabari was asked to preside over the valediction of the Electronics & Communication Engineering course and address the students graduating in 2013.

The students got to listen to Sabari share his experiences of being an entrepreneur and the learnings from skillveri’s journey so far.


It is always a pleasure to be among young minds and the 2013 ECE batch of BIT was no exception !


The skillveri team wishes the young grads all the very best in life, and hope they find success in whatever they choose to do.
